Australia had a family bond with Britain based on the Empire and the ANZUS alliance with the United States. However, Australia now accepts responsibility for its own fate and negotiates its own way in Asia and the rest of the world.
This series looks at Australia's march to full independence, our desire to create a land of the 'fair go'; the unfinished business of relations with Aboriginal Australia and the reliance on the great and powerful friends of Britain and the US.
